As Northern New England's largest professional, non-profit theater, Portland
Stage is dedicated to establishing a dialogue between artist and audience that inspires energetic discussion of issues and experiences that are immediate and compelling in our modern world.
Since its inception in 1974 as the Profile Theater, a touring company of young artists, Portland Stage has increased the range and depth of its season, joined the League of Resident Theatres, expanded its exceptional educational programming, increased its commitment to new play development, and established an annual audience of over 50,000 people. The audience Portland Stage serves is as diverse as the population of New England, and the theater seeks to stimulate the imagination of our community with equally diverse programming.
Portland Stage's Affiliate Artists are an artistic collective of local theater professionals who choose to devote themselves to this community. During each season, these actors, directors, and educators present and participate in a range of programs dedicated to exploring new theatrical works, bringing the written word to the stage, and welcoming the community into the theater.
The Cave by Eleanor Burgess
Saturday, April 1st 7:30pm
Directed by Todd Brian Backus
As winters get colder and food gets scarce, a makeshift tribe of cavemen struggles to decide whether to remain in the place they call home or head to greener pastures in the south. This new play by Eleanor Burgess shows us the lives that we evolved to lead, exploring our relationship with nature, our place in the universe, and what relationships mean in a time of survival.
Presented by Affiliate Artist Todd Brian Backus.
Love's a Bitch written and directed by Dave Dalton
freely adapted from Don Gil de las calzas verdes by Tirso de Molina
Monday, April 3rd 7:30pm
Dumped, abandoned, and humiliated, Doña Juana has been jilted by her boyfriend in favor of a richer woman in the big city. But Juana discovers what she's really made of by dressing as a man, stealing her boyfriend's identity, and seducing the Rich Woman before he can reach her. In this free adaption of Tirso's Spanish Golden Age classic, Dave Dalton shows that love can hurt, heal, and kick a little ass.
Presented by Affiliate Artist Abigail Killeen.
