As its final presentation of the 2013-14 season, Lakewood Theatre Company will open May 2, 2014 with a new production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's glorious American musical, Show Boat, on the Headlee Mainstage at Lakewood Center for the Arts.
Music for Show Boat is by
Jerome Kern and the book and lyrics are by
Oscar Hammerstein II. The story is based on the novel by
Edna Ferber. Noted musical numbers include such classic songs as "Ol' Man River," "Make Believe," and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man."
With stage direction by Ron Daum and musical direction by Jon Quesenberry the cast of Show Boat includes
Jay Pevney as Captain Andy Hawks, Matthew Hayward as Gaylord Ravenal, Geoffery Simmons as Joe, Carmen Brantley-Payne as Queenie, Jennifer Davies as Magnolia and Laila Murphy as Julie.
Performances continue through Sunday, June 8, 2014 playing Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM, one Wednesday performance May 21 at 7:30 PM, Sundays at 7:00 PM (May 4, 11, 18 and June 1), Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM (May 11, 18, 25 and June 1 and 8) and one Saturday matinee June 7 at 2:00 PM. The story: Based on
Edna Ferber's novel of the same name, Show Boat covers a span of 40 years, and how those years affected Captain Andy Hawk's family and their showboat troop of actors who perform on the Cotton Blossom floating theater. Interwoven into the groundbreaking plot were such topics as mixed marriages, racial prejudice, addiction, and desertion.
