Miracle Theatre Group will offer a free 8-week class in "danzón" on Tuesday evenings in February and March at El Centro Milagro in Southeast Portland.
Danzón is not only the official dance of Cuba, but it's also very popular in the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz in Mexico, particularly in the main plazas of Veracruz, Oaxaca and Mexico City as well as in yearly festivals across the country.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basic steps from folkloric dance instructor Kenya Marquez and then try them out on the dance floor of Miracle's Zócalo, a community space adjacent to the theatre lobby at 537 SE Stark St.
Before the class begins, though, Miracle Theatre Group will offer an introductory session to meet the instructor and learn about the dance, the music and the class. Participants who choose to continue with the free class will then meet Tuesday evenings for eight weeks, culminating with an informal recital for friends and family.
To RSVP for the introductory session Feb. 14, call 503-236-7253 ext. 121 or write to susy@milagro.org.
