Contigo Pan y Cebolla is the classic Cuban comedy by Héctor Quintero, set in late 1950s Havana, just before the Cuban Revolution. The story focuses on the Prieto family struggling to maintain appearances in a society that measures worth based on material possessions. A brilliant and hilarious dissection of family life and the fragility of love, the literal translation of the title is 'with you, bread and onion,' a phrase that figuratively means 'with you, through thick and thin' or 'for better or worse.'

Contigo Pan y Cebolla was written in 1962. It had its Cuban premiere at Teatro Estudio in 1964 and received an honorable mention from the Casa de las Américas Prize, a Cuban cultural award. Since then, the play has been produced numerous times in other countries in the Americas. The bilingual version, Rice and Beans, was produced in the United States by INTAR in 1979.

In 1993, Milagro offered its first programming in Spanish when it presented a single evening of Botánica, by Dolores Prida, produced by New York City's Repertorio Español. Over 300 patrons and students attended the performance, demonstrating a strong local interest in Spanish language theatre. More than twenty years later, Milagro presents Contigo Pan y Cebolla for its Northwest Premiere in a four-week run on the mainstage. Every year since 2006, Milagro has produced a fully-mounted Spanish language production in its season lineup. Offering Spanish language theatre embodies Milagro's commitment to producing work from Latino writers.

ABOUT MILAGRO
For over 30 years, Milagro has been dedicated to bringing the vibrancy of Latino theatre, culture and arts education to audiences in the Pacific Northwest and across the country. We provide a home for artists and audiences seeking authentic, Latino cultural experiences. We value creativity and diversity; we welcome the risk of experimentation while respecting tradition; we empower our artists to think creatively and act collaboratively; we are often irreverent but never irrelevant. We entertain our audiences; we give them pause to think, feel and imagine; and, through the cultural lens of latinidad, we reflect the full spectrum of humanity. As a proud community leader and thinker, we speak boldly and authoritatively; as imaginative artists, we embrace the colorful and vivacious, the provocative and playful.
