Mad Horse Theatre Company presents the Maine premiere of The History Boys by Alan Bennett. The History Boys will be presented April 23-May 10, 2009 in the Studio Theater at Portland Stage Company.

The History Boys will be directed by Mad Horse Associate Artistic Director, Peter Brown. The cast includes Mad Horse company members Brent Askari, James Herrera and Christine Louise Marshall. The cast will also include guest artists Ian Carlsen and several actors from local schools-Jason Badeau and Nick Reynolds (Gorham High School); Philip Rogers (Freeport High School); Rick Blake (Waynflete Academy); and Danny Gay, Lucas Perry and Nate Speckman (University of Southern Maine). Greely High School junior Colin Thomas Rounds out the cast.

The History Boys, which won a record six Tony Awards in 2006, is a deeply-moving comedy that explores the anarchy of adolescence and raises questions about the nature of history and how it should be taught. Set in the 1980's at a mid-rate boys' school in northern England, it tells the story of eight bright, funny history students seeking admission to the country's most competitive universities: Oxford and Cambridge. Their headmaster, obsessed with advancing the school's prestige, hires a young hotshot history teacher to groom the boys on how to stand out in their entrance exams.

The new teacher's sensationalistic methods clash with those of the boys' other mentors: a maverick English teacher who advocates the pursuit of knowledge regardless of its value, and a history teacher who believes in a firm foundation of fact. As the ‘History Boys' prepare for their exams and navigate their teachers' philosophical tug-of-war, their journey becomes as much about how education works as where it leads.
