About the Musical

Music and lyrics for Pippin are by Stephen Schwartz and the book is by Roger O. Hirson. Pippin originally made its debut on the Broadway stage in 1972 winning 5 Tony Awards followed by the 2013 revival, also a multiple Tony winner. This production will be the 2013 revival script and score.

With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theatre giant, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell), Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival in 2013, this updated version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.

The story: Leading us all on a wild journey, the Leading Player and a troupe of players tell the story of the heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin, who is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment (Corner of the Sky). He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield (War is a Science' & 'Glory), the temptations of the flesh (With You), and the intrigues of political power after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the Great (Morning Glow). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the un-extraordinary moments that happen every day.

66 Years of Live Theatre: Founded as a not-for-profit organization in 1952, Lakewood Theatre Company is a professional theatre dedicated to the study and presentation of drama in all its forms; the training and development of actors; and the creation, maintenance and operation of a theatre in which to present plays and other forms of entertainment. Lakewood Theatre Company is the oldest continually operated, not-for-profit theatre company in the Portland Metropolitan area. It annually provides theatre artists opportunities to learn and display their craft and attracts more than 35,000 people to its shows.
