Good Theater, the professional theater company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, will kick off its 15th Anniversary Season with the Portland premiere of the 2013 Tony Award winning Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang and directed by Good Theater's Artistic Director, Brian P. Allen The show will begin on Wednesday October 19 and play for five weeks through Sunday November 20 for a total of 30 performances.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike stars Good Theater favorites Paul Haley as Vanya, Laura Houck as Sonia, Lisa Stathoplos as Masha and newcomer Marshall Taylor Thurman as Spike. Also in the cast are Meredith Lamothe and Noelle LuSane as Cassandra.
The production team includes Craig Robinson, set designer and technical director; Justin Cote, costume designer; Iain Odlin, lighting designer; Michael Lynch, production stage manager; Cheryl Dolan, scenic artist. The location is a country house in Bucks County in late summer, present time.
In addition to the Tony Award for Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike received five additional Tony Award nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor, Best Featured Actress and Best Director. The play received the New York Drama Critics' Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama League Award, and the Drama Desk Award all for Best Play.
Vanya and Sonia live in Pennsylvania having taken care of their elderly parents who are now deceased. Their movie star sister Masha returns home with her newest boy toy, Spike in tow. A young actress from next door and a sassy housekeeper round out the cast of this delightful comedy. When Masha announces she wants to sell the family house, emotions fly and hilarity ensues.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is the first show in Good Theater's season. Season tickets are available for as little as $45 for three shows. The other productions in the season are: the Maine premiere of The May Queen by Molly Smith Metzler January 25-February 26, the classic The Trip to Bountiful by Horton Foote March 29-April 30. Also the company will produce two special events: Broadway at Good Theater November 30-December 4, this year a tribute to 1970s Broadway; and A.R. Gurney's charming hit Love Letters starring Brian P. Allen and Kathleen Kimball January 4-8, January 31, February 7, 14 and 21.
Good Theater was founded by Brian P. Allen and Steve Underwood after producing at show at the St. Lawrence in 2001. The company began its first full season in the fall of 2002. Since its inception Good Theater has presented 59 main stage productions, VANYA will be the company's 60th show. In addition to the main stage productions, Good Theater has also presented 28 special events.
