Now in its second season, Crave Theatre presents Crossing by the South African playwright Reza de Wet, directed by Sarah Andrews, in the play's Portland premiere, May 18th-June 3rd at the Shoe Box Theatre, 2110 SE 10th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm.
Set in a real-yet-unreal Victorian-era inn, Sussie, the hunchback (Jessica Tidd) and her sister Hermien (Sarah McGregor) are tasked with keeping desperate travelers from crossing the dangerous river when it is in flood, and when their warnings fail, of burying the dead. Yet, when a ghost from their past returns to haunt their home, the sisters must have a séance to discover the spirit's name and put her to rest. When the séance allows the sisters to relive the night that Maestro the hypnotist (David Mitchum Brown) and his assistant (Kylie Jenifer Rose) came to visit, old grievances are brought to life as the four characters examine their abusive relationships and each struggle to advocate for themselves when faced with the inevitable conflict between dreams and responsibility. This mesmerizing ghost story contains strong feminist undertones, and dares the audience to consider the power of choice.
