Yanni was born in the southern Greek metropolis of Kalamata. He came to the United States to attend the University of Minnesota and was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005. He studied psychology, but ultimately dedicated himself to music, which he felt was “a time bomb ticking inside” him.
