Stage Right Professional Theatre Company will bring the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic Jesus Christ Superstar to the Palace Theatre Thursday, April 13 through Saturday, April 15.
The show features a cast of 90 people. Vince Tresco and Anthony Marino will reprise their roles of Jesus and Judas. They are joined by Quinn Patrick Shannon as Pilate, Courtney Harkins as Mary Magdalene, Jason Swauger as Simon, Josh List as Peter, John Noble as Caiaphas, and Stage Right Choreographer Renata Marino as a Beyonce inspired King Herod. The cast also includes Greg Kerestan, Hank Fodor and Adam Grosset. Christopher McAllister is the Musical Director for the production, with scenic design by Mark Kissner.
Director Marino says the scenic design as well as the size of cast was key to his concept. "I wanted to create something that looked like it was painted by Michelangelo or Caravaggio. I wanted to bring the "Wedding at Cana" to life. So working with my creative team we're being inspired by the same color palettes and architecture of those painters. In some cases, we'll create sections of the painting in how we stage the scene and have it supported by the actual painting as a projection. Its also why I went with such a large cast. These paintings had a ton of people and having that on stage creates a sense of space and urgency that is really thrilling. Plus we have actual families onstage, and that also provides a perfect dynamic for the show."
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed Thursday, April 13th and Good Friday, April 14th at 7:30 and Saturday, April 15th at 2:00 and 7:30. For tickets call Stage Right at 724.832.7464 or the Palace box office at 724.836.8000.
