Stage Right's Professional Theatre Company closes out its season with the musical theatre classic West Side Story, beginning today, April 15 and continuing through April 17 at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg. The show, originally staged by Jerome Robbins, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, has long been considered one of the greatest works of musical theatre. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
The Stage Right production features Vince and Rachael Tresco as Tony and Maria, Justin Lonesome (National tour of Jersey Boys) and Renata Marino as Bernardo and Anita, Alex Noble (Pgh Public's Guys and Dolls) as Action, Zakk Mannella (Manhattan Marymount) as Riff, Tony Marino (Book writer for NYMF's upcoming production of Tink!) as Shrank, Brendan Conaway as Diesel and Jason Swauger (Rugrats Tour) as Chino. Also featured are John Noble as Doc, Ben Wren as Glad-hand Hank Fodor as Officer Krupke, Klase Danko as Consuelo, Courtney Harkins as Rosalia and Megan Poitras and Julia Smolka as Velma and Graziella.
Artistic Director Tony Marino: "This show is a challenge because I wanted actors above all else. The show works best when you can find great actors who are also really good singers and dancers. We've lucked into some major talents who's schedules worked out in our favor. With them on board we're going to be able to tell this story in a deeply passionate and very truthful way."
West Side Story will be performed at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, April 15-17.
