The story begins with a boy finding a striped hat sitting on a box on a bare stage. The boy tries to touch the hat, and out of the box pops The Cat in the Hat, one of the most beloved literary figures from the collection of Dr. Seuss (Theodore Giesel).

"Seussical, the Musical" is a charming tale that brings many of Dr. Suess' characters to life in a story about the power of imagination and the importance of friendship.

The show was written by the Tony award-winning duo of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who have also written the shows "Once on this Island", "My Favorite Year", "Lucky Stiff", and "Ragtime". Rights for this production are from Music Theatre International.

The cast includes both children and adults, and features actors from around the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, Concord, as well as Pittsburg and Antioch, proving that good people will travel from afar to appear in a quality production.

Pittsburg Community Theatre (PCT) is partnering with both the City of Pittsburg and the Creative Arts Building Foundation (CAB), their first collaboration. When CAB approached PCT about partnering on a project that would promote both organizations, and that would benefit the entire Pittsburg community.

This production also serves to mark two very important anniversaries. PCT became an Incorporated, non-profit theater company in April, 1979. Previously, the program had been operated under the auspices of Pittsburg Adult Education, but Prop 13 came along, so PCT decided to go out on their own. Seussical closes PCTs 30th season.

Also celebrating an anniversary is the Creative Arts Building itself, which turns 50 in May. Three nights of performances in May (24th, 28th, 29th) are commencing immediately following the Seussical production, and will feature performers celebrating the music and dance that has taken place in the building for the past 50 years.

Seussical is the musical is the tale of Horton the Elephant (who finds the Whos, tiny inhabitants of Whoville, a tiny world that no one can see and only Horton can hear), and his friendship with Jojo, a resident of Whoville with a big imagination. Horton vows to protect Who, and the adventure begins. The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, The Sour Kangaroo Yertle the Turtle, and even the Grinch join Jojo and Horton as Horton tries to get the rest of the creatures of the Jungle of Nool, his beloved home, to believe that Whoville is real. Filled with great songs and many more beloved Dr. Seuss characters, the show is a wonderful musical experience, suitable for the entire family.
