The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Pittsburgh International Children's Theater, a division of the Cultural Trust, are proud to present the spectacular, talented Russian American Kid's Circus, back by popular demand and returning to Pittsburgh, at the Byham Theater on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Cohen & Grigsby is the season sponsor of the Trust Presents series.
Founded by former Moscow Circus star, Alex Berenchtein, this dazzling show is composed of athletes ranging in age from six to sixteen who are trained entirely by veterans of the Moscow Circus. By combining circus arts, theater, dance, music, and comedy into one awe-inspiring performance, the Russian American Kid's Circus has created an exciting new genre of entertainment for audiences of all ages.
With daring feats of athleticism and grace, Berenchtein's circus celebrates the artistry and magic of the modern circus while paying homage to its rich European roots. "This troupe of young professionals makes spirits soar and crowds roar!" (The New York Times).
This former star acrobat and juggler for the Moscow Circus began his training at the age of six. After winning four international competitions, Berenchtein came to the United States in 1990 to form a circus school based on the world-renowned traditions of his homeland. Along with his wife, Regina, and mother-in-law, Olga Partigul, he opened a non-profit academy, The New Way Circus Center, in 1994. Based in Brooklyn, New York, this unique program encourages teamwork, creativity, self-confidence, and physical fitness in local youth of all ethnicities. Two years later, Berenchtein asked his most advanced Russian American students to form the Russian American Kid's Circus, an elite performing troupe that trains for three hours each day. Through his young performers, Berenchtein hopes to inspire audiences to believe in their own abilities and pursue their dreams with passion and courage.
