The Pittsburgh International Children's Theater, a division of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, is proud to announce a dazzling 40th season of international and national performing arts programming of professional quality for the cultural enrichment and education of children and families. The family series will include award-winning theater companies featuring live performances on stage for young audiences ages 3 and up.
2009 Performances: Click, Clack, Moo by Theatreworks USA (USA), based on Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin's award-winning book, October 11-18; The Adventures of Harold and The Purple Crayon by The Enchantment Theatre Company (USA), based on the well-known book series by Crockett Johnson, November 10-15;
2010 Performances: Pigeon Party! Starring Mo Williams' Pigeon by Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company (UK), January 26-31; Henry and Mudge, by Theatreworks,USA, based on Cynthia Rylant's award-winning books, March 7-14; and Fred Garbo's Inflatable Theater Co. (USA), April 10-11.
Each performance in the family series will take place at five or six locations throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area. Locations include: City Series: Byham Theater; North Series: Pine-Richland High School; West Series: Moon High School and another location to be announced; South Series: Keystone Oaks High School; and East Series: Gateway High School. Monday-morning Student Series continues again this season at the Byham Theater and begin at 10:15 am. School groups may purchase tickets for these performances and study guides will be provided.
The Pittsburgh International Children's Theater 2009-2010 family series will include outstanding performances by award winning children's theater companies from the United States and the United Kingdom who have performed to audiences around the world. Theatreworks USA (USA) is America's largest professional non-profit theatre for young and family audiences. Founded in 1961, they are the only children's theater to receive both a Drama Desk and a Lucille Lortel Award. For over 25 years, Philadelphia-based Enchantment Theatre Company (USA) has been presenting inspiring classic tales using its special blend of magic, mask, pantomime, puppetry, and original music. Their goal is to inspire, challenge, and enrich audiences through imaginative storytelling. Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company (UK) strives to entertain and inform young people, drawing from different cultures and traditions to present entertaining and educational work. The company has presented original book adaptations for stage productions throughout the United Kingdom and United States. The Stage comments, "It's a small-scale production...makes imaginative use of single hinged flats for scene changes and has some good songs - is a fine piece of theatre." Fred Garbo Inflatable Theatre Co. (USA) premiered in 1998 to sold-out houses on Broadway at the New Victory Theatre and has traveled the globe presenting amazing performances bursting with original, fantastic, pneumatic suits of all shapes and sizes, dexterous juggling, dance, hilarious visual comedy, mischief and art. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit organization whose mission is the cultural and economic development of Pittsburgh's 14-block Cultural District through public and private support. The Trust presents and encourages diverse performing and visual arts programs within the District, and is an impetus for additional development in downtown Pittsburgh.
