Pittsburgh CLO and the University of Pittsburgh are proud to announce the nominees for the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater. The awards show will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. at the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh.
Over the past three months, a panel of 36 judges have attended the performances by the following 29 Allegheny County high schools: Avonworth, Baldwin, Bishop Canevin, Central Catholic, Chartiers Valley, Deer Lakes, Elizabeth Forward, Hampton Township, Keystone Oaks, McKeesport, North Catholic, North Hills, Northgate, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Penn Hills, Pine-Richland, Pittsburgh Allderdice, Pittsburgh CAPA, Pittsburgh Perry, Pittsburgh Schenley, Plum, Riverview, St. Joseph, Shaler, Springdale, Vincentian Academy, West Mifflin, Winchester Thurston and Woodland Hills.

Pittsburgh CLO will award cash scholarships to high school seniors who have applied and been accepted to a school for the performing or technical arts. Each of the twenty-nine Gene Kelly schools were allowed to nominate students who excelled within his/her high school musical theater program for these merit-based scholarships. Each nominee auditioned before a panel of judges on May 6. The Pittsburgh CLO Ambassadors will award cash scholarships to high school senior college applicants, whether or not they are pursuing a major in the performing or technical arts. These scholarships are made possible through the generous donations of Donald Arnheim, Paul Block, Virginia Nicklas and the CLO Ambassadors. College scholarships will also be awarded through the generosity of Point Park University and Westminster Choir College.
The Pittsburgh CLO Guild will present the Constance T. Rockwell scholarship. This scholarship recognizes the achievements of local high school seniors pursuing a further education in the performing arts. The scholarship is named for the late Connie Rockwell, who founded the Pittsburgh CLO Guild in 1953 and played a valuable leadership role in the local theater arts community for more than 50 years. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving local high school seniors, in keeping with Mrs. Rockwell's desire to recognize, encourage and support talented high school students who want to pursue an education and a career in the performing arts. High school seniors who want to pursue a college education in the theater arts were encouraged to apply. Scholarships are issued in a minimum amount of $4,000 and are awarded based on talent, financial need, scholastic merit and school and community involvement. Prior to submitting a scholarship application, the student must have applied to an accredited college,
university or conservatory that offers a four-year program with a requisite audition. After reviewing the applications, the Scholarship Committee interviews and auditioned each semi-finalist. The recipients of the Constance T. Rockwell Scholarship will be announced at the ceremony on May 28.
The Gene Kelly Awards are co-presented by the University of Pittsburgh with additional support provided by American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, PNC Bank, Virginia S. Nicklas and the Pittsburgh CLO Ambassadors. Deloitte, LLP is the official auditor for the Gene Kelly Awards.
Pittsburgh CLO is also pleased to announce that Gene Kelly's widow, Patricia Ward Kelly, will once again participate in the awards show.
