Christina Gorman's compelling drama challenges moral principles, personal loyalties, and relationships while exploring the often-blurred lines between history and truth.
Based on actual events, American Myth follows a young journalist who accuses his former history professor of fabricating accounts of his Vietnam War record. Accounts that the eager writer had included as facts in a laudatory profile of the famous man. This highly topical play examines intriguing moral questions in today's controversy-saturated society, where the smallest public misstep can result in utter catastrophe and seemingly irreparable damage to one's reputation and others' perceptions. What should we believe? What should we question? What is the American Myth?
"I'm endlessly fascinated by individuals who seem to have it all, who are at the top of their chosen professions, yet exaggerate or fabricate events in their past," remarked Gorman when asked about her interest in writing this piece. "Most recently, think of the controversy surrounding NBC anchor Brian Williams and his now debunked stories about his experiences in Iraq. What drives this need? Where does it come from?"
Directed by Studio member Robyn Allen, American Myth features members Steven Mastroieni, Susan Back, Mark Gluckman, Bill Straus, Marney Austin, Patti Hurtado, and David Heap, with guest artists Christy Sweeney and Tyler Gasper.
