August storms in to Phoenix with a blast of incredible jazz, as local and visiting artists fill the calendar at The Nash. BIRDSEED brings an all - Charlie Parker concert, the new funky band MR. PEOPLE hit the stage for First Friday, and PAPA DEFRANCESCO shows audiences where son Joey got his chops from.


The Nash Summer Workshops also continue this month with programs for instrumentalists, composers, vocalists and ensembles. Information and registration is available on the Nash's website, www.thenash.org.
As always, The Nash hosts mainstream and contemporary jazz concerts each weekend, with Sunday Jam Sessions each Sunday evening, and the Last Friday Late Night Jam on the last Friday of the month.
Advance tickets are on sale at www.thenash.org or may be purchased at the door.
The Nash is located at 110 E. Roosevelt St on Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix.

Peter Zale returns to The Nash to perform a show with the theme of "My Favorite Things". Zale and his trio will play selected cuts and compositions by a long list of influences, including Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinal, Thelonious Monk, Groove Holmes, Larry Young, Herbie Hancock and Clare Fischer.

Collin Shook, at 26, is an award-winning American jazz pianist, composer, and bassist, from Austin Texas, where he performs piano and double bass as a sideman and leader.
Collin's compositions and voice as a pianist lends towards a blend of more modern, post-bop pianistic styles, drawing influence from Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner and Tommy Flannigan. "Clearly Shook knows his Bill Evans, a joyous thing. His pacing, voicing and dramatic builds have Evans whispering in his ear." - Marc Myers 2012

Mr. People is a new instrumental funk band based in Phoenix, Arizona that blends strands of modern hip-hop sensibilities-heavy bass, kick and snare along with the soul of jazz. Mr. People is an effort to go from behind the scenes to the stage. Artists involved have produced for various local R&B artists including Morris Alan & Teri Tobin.

Stan Smith is an associate professor of music in the Conservatory of Music at Capital University, performs with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as well as numerous Broadway Series productions in the pit. He has accompanied various artists such as Ali Ryerson, David Amram, Mark Vinci and David Ornette Cherry performing in clubs, concerts, and festivals.

Alto saxophonist Alex Young is a recent graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies. Young has studied with Bryon Ruth, Mike Kocour, Ralph Lalama, and Dave Pietro. He has performed at The Nash, the Lost Leaf, Winfields, Club Congress, and the Vig. He has shared the stage with musicians such as Gabe Hall Rodriguez, Jacob Eary, and Aleks Izotov, and he has performed with the Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra under the direction of Fred Forney. Young cites alto saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and Dave Binney as influences.

BIRDSEED Named as a Tribute to the great Charlie Parker ("Bird"), Birdseed features a cast of Phoenix heavy hitters: the great Jonathan Starks on drums, Chris Light and Eric Rasmussen on Alto Saxophones, Ben Hedquist on bass, and Alex Oliverio on guitar, . The band will play a broad selection of Charlie Parker masterpieces covering the entire spectrum of interpretation, from "straight-swinging" to "existential grooves" all the way to "post-modern" jazz. It will be an unforgettable night for sure.

The father of renowned jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Papa John" had his career revived when his son's success helped bring about the renaissance of the Hammond organ. He has gained a national reputation of his own for playing the organ in an infectious hard bop style not that different from his son.

Danny Long headlined in Chicago, toured nationally, released an album on Capitol Records and inhabited the showrooms of Las Vegas prior to moving to Phoenix in 1980. He draws his musical repertoire primarily from the Great American Songbook, interpreting tunes by such masters as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and Rodgers and Hart.

Valley-based vocalist Khani Cole has been a fixture in the greater Phoenix area since relocating from her native Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the early '90s. Cole had an unprecedented ten-and-a-half year run at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs before opening her own music venue, Voce Lounge in Scottsdale. She has released several albums that have brought her into the national and international consciousness and recently performed with George Benson at the Hollywood Bowl and a tour in Europe through Denmark and Germany.

Cuban pianist Marcos Crego comes to the Nash for an all out Latin blast. The Grammy nominated musician has worked with many of the top bands including the Afro Cuban All Stars, Francisco Cespedes as well as major festivals around the country. With his Havana roots and collaborative style, audiences will be treated to an authentic high-energy show that will transport them to the tropics.

Devon Bridgewater and the Nuance Jazz Trio have been a mainstay of the Phoenix jazz scene, performing their sophisticated jazz with the utmost style. Devon Bridgewater, a native Phoenician, graduated from Harvard University, where he played in the prestigious Monday Night Jazz Band, and has performed with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Ted Curson.

Singer/songwriter/pianist Annie Moscow takes the stage to premiere her brand new, long-awaited CD, "It's Just Water", produced by John Jennings (Grammy winning producer & guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter) and local producer, Nick Gasmena, of Hit Warehouse. Moscow will be joined on stage by powerhouse musicians: Stan Sorenson on guitar, Michael Mulryan on violin and Don Cooper on drums and percussion. Poignant, powerful, dynamic, eclectic and Fun.

Will Goble is steadily carving out a unique space for himself as a bassist and bandleader. Driven by a genuine love for group interaction and a positive exchange with audiences, he leads his own bands and supports other musicians with equal energy and enthusiasm. Will regularly tours and records with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet and actively performs and teaches here in Phoenix and beyond. Will is scheduled to return to the studio in fall of 2015 to record his second album as a leader, featuring Saxophonist Gregory Tardy, pianist Louis Heriveaux, and Potter.

The Nash's Last Friday Late Night Jam Sessions showcase the wide array of talent in the Valley as musicians drop in, arriving from playing at an earlier gig or concert, and spontaneously perform with the band. These jam sessions give serious up-and-coming jazz musicians the ability to play with more experienced players and mentors and the public the ability to enjoy spontaneous high-level jazz performances with an "insider's" feel.

Denise Martin has been a jazz singer in Arizona for over 20 years. She attended the Berklee College of Music and performed on cruise ships before returning to the desert, where she continually amazes listeners with her easy command of her instrument.

Now with the release of five remarkable recordings (Out Of The Blue, Eclecticism, Bebop Big Band, Can You Dig Being Dug and The Lost Bill Holman Charts), Carl's musical talents can be heard and enjoyed by a much wider audience.
