Teatro Bravo brings back "14" by Jose Casas, a play that it originally produced in 2003, chronicling the events in which fourteen immigrants died crossing the desert near Yuma, Arizona. The play is based on interviews with Arizonans and their various different attitudes towards the contemporary issues of undocumented immigration.
Casas interviewed a variety of people, including a preacher who leaves immigrants water in the desert, a Southern Arizona rancher who seeks to protect his property, a young woman married to a Latino border patrolman who's tragically killed, another fabulous young Latina with her own magazine, an army veteran who's returned from Iraq, and a variety of other voices of real Arizonans with strong opinions.
The play will be directed by Marcelino Quiñonez, who has directed for NewCarpa Theater, and who marks his first directorial assignment for Teatro Bravo with "14." Marcelino has performed for Teatro Bravo in "Romeo y Julieta," the Shakespeare classic performed in Spanish in 2004, with "The Hispanick Zone" written and directed by former artistic director
Guillermo Reyes in2006, and also performed his one one-man show, "Che," which Teatro Bravo included in New Plays Festival in 2009. Interim Artistic Director FernandoTeson will supervise the proceedings, as will Executive Producer Trino Sandoval.
The play includes the performances of Israel Jimenez, Ricky Araiza, Sarah
Lovell , Erica Mathlin, and Marcelino Quiñonez.
