About DemDike's Devils
In 1612 ten women were hung for the crime of murder by witchcraft, but were they guilty or innocent?
DemDike's Devils is based on the transcript of their trial held in Lancaster Castle, and incorporates quotes from contemporary plays that were, in most instances, inspired by the same source and events.
This was a time in England when religious persecution and superstition ran unchecked, women were the property of men, witchcraft was illegal, and so was practicing a religion other than that of the Protestant Church of England. King James I obsessed with witchcraft, and fearing Catholic rebellion, was Protector of the Faith and head of the Church of England. A result of his fears, some real, but most not, was that harsh penalties were imposed on Catholics and witches alike. Catholics who put the Pope above the King were guilty of treason and likely to be burned at the stake, but who was considered a witch in 1612? Pretty much anyone, innocent and guilty alike, all that was needed was one outlandish accusation. The distinction between witchcraft and Catholicism became blurred, but both were capital crimes. You did have a choice though; hang as a witch, or burn as a Catholic.
DemDike's Devils was written by Wendy Warwick White who will also direct the production for Space 55. The cast features Dennis Frederick, Ann Harper, Megan Holcomb, Mary Lynn Lobello, Carolyn McBurney, Ashley Naftule and Robert Peters.
