Mesa Arts Center and National Geographic announce a riveting line-up of events for the fourth season of the Arizona speaker series presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield. The four-part series will kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with underwater explorer and conservationist Jean-Michel Cousteau, the son of the legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, who will reflect on his father's life and ongoing legacy.

Since the age of seven-when he was "thrown overboard," scuba gear and all, by his famous father-the legendary Jacques Cousteau. Jean-Michel has carried on the family tradition of ocean exploration and advocacy. An award-winning filmmaker, one of his documentaries helped persuade President George W. Bush to declare the Northwest Hawaiian Islands a Marine National Monument.

His most recent book, My Father, The Captain: My Life with Jacques Cousteau, was published in May by National Geographic Books. Celebrating the centennial of Cousteau's birth, the biography takes an open and intimate look at the life Jean-Michel shared with his father. His presentation will be a heartfelt tribute to a great pioneer of exploration and conservation and will provide insight into how Jean-Michel is carrying on his father's important work.

National Geographic Live and Mesa Arts Center will also present companion events for area students and educators. Each of the speakers featured in the evening series present a matinee performance specifically geared to students (primarily middle school students). Lessons plans and other related materials are available in preparation for the events. Schools may register on a first-come, first-served basis for these matinees at www.nglive.org/arizona.
