A soon-to-open music-and-arts venue, Venue 104 is aiming to bring some "alternative" energy to downtown Tempe. Venue 104 will spotlight local music and theater.

Part of the Cornerstone shopping center at Rural Road and University Drive,  Venue 4 will be a hybrid business, with a cafe space serving coffee and sandwiches and a separate stage for concerts and Theater Productions. A smaller room will double as an art gallery and rehearsal hall.

The cafe will open on (or shortly after) Friday, Aug. 12. The concert venue will open Friday, Aug. 19, with a free concert featuring popular local bands Captain Squeegee and Obadiah Parker.

Giving a boost to local music is the primary focus, but Venue 104 also will book touring acts via indie promoters Stateside Presents and Psyko Steve. Additionally, it will be the home to Peck's NewBrave Theatre, which debuts Friday, Sept. 16, with "Mr. Marmalade," a black comedy about a 4-year-old whose imaginary friend is into some rather adult entertainments, including cocaine and sex toys.

Other performances planned for the space include jazz-funk outfit Pork Chop and the Tenderloins on Saturday, Aug. 20, and the Scandalesque burlesque troupe on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10.

Venue 104 Performance Cafe is located at 940 E. University Drive, Tempe.
