Fresh from the national tour of Bye Bye Birdie, Michael LaMasa returns to the Arizona Broadway Theatre stage to lead ABT's production of Bye Bye Birdie, which opens on June 5, 2009, and continues through July 19, 2009.
LaMasa, who was last seen on the ABT stage in The Music Man, portrays Albert Peterson, the manager of recently drafted rock star Conrad Birdie, played by ABT newcomer Justin Jutras. Other returning actors include Erin O'Neil (Guys and Dolls) as Rose Alvarez, Chelsea Groen (The Music Man) as Kim MacAfee, and Carolyn McPhee (La Cage aux Folles, Pump Boys and Dinettes) as Doris MacAfee. Those making their ABT debuts include D. Scott Withers as Harry MacAfee and Stacey Gordon as Mae Peterson. Bye Bye Birdie is directed by Robert Kolby Harper, a familiar name in The Phoenix Theatre community, who serves as the Associate Artistic Director for Phoenix Theatre and as the Artistic Director for The Cookie Company at Phoenix Theatre. Jeff Kennedy is the music director and Kurtis W. Overby is the choreographer.
About Bye Bye Birdie
Conrad Birdie, the biggest singing sensation of the 1960s, has been drafted. But before he ships out, his manager signs him up for one last publicity stunt. Conrad will kiss one
randomly chosen member of his teenage fan club goodbye on a live broadcast of The Ed
Sullivan Show. Kim MacAfee of Sweet Apple, Ohio, has little idea how much her life is
about to change when she becomes the lucky girl chosen. Inspired by the hysteria surrounding Elvis Presley's induction into the Army, this fun-lovin' musical comedy
(more)
presents a hilarious look at bygone days. This classic includes such memorable songs as Kids, Put on a Happy Face, Honestly Sincere and One Last Kiss.
