Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, featuring all male dancers who combine a loving knowledge of classical ballet with a wicked sense of fun, deliver their ballet parodies center stage at Mesa Arts Center Thursday, February 11, at 7:30 p.m. Humorously portraying both male and female characters, the "Trocks" perform multiple pieces mixing traditional ballet clichés with more serious pieces that showcase the dancers' true talents. Tickets are $27-$47 and are available through the Mesa Arts Center Box Office at 480-644-6500 or by visiting mesaartscenter.com.
Founded by Eugene McDougle, Peter Anastos, Natch Taylor and Anthony Basse, during the height of the 70's drag movement, the New York based "Trocks" have performed for sold-out audiences throughout the world. Upon joining the group, each member is given a male and female persona, complete with Russian names. The "Trocks" perform their own take on many famous dance pieces including their trademark "Swan Lake Act II", complete with tutus, wigs, makeup, and of course, strong biceps.
Although the "Trocks" add a witty twist to a more traditional art form, the sheer talent and amazing choreography of the show fosters an appreciation for classical ballet in itself. Highly acclaimed by The New York Times, the comedic and lighthearted style of the "Trocks" dancing both in drag and en pointe (a technique traditionally reserved for females) is enough to delight any crowd.
