Joey 'D', Warren Wolf and More Coming Up at The Nash

March brings a new collection of outstanding artists in jazz for its Special Engagement Series. In addition to its weekly shows featuring emerging and veteran jazz artists every Friday and Saturday nights, Jam sessions on Sunday evenings and packed First Fridays, the top names in jazz are arriving to perform at the noted jazz club in downtown Phoenix.

These appearances include the incomparable Joey "D" DeFrancesco making The Nash one of the first stops on his 2017 tour for his new CD release on March 19, vocalist Giacomo Gates on March 11, the "young lion" Warren Wolf who makes his first appearance here following his collaborative work with Jazz at Lincoln Center and his new release, "Convergence" on March 14 and the David Tull and Rebecca Kilgore Quartet on March 1.

The Nash has just been named to Downbeat Magazine's 2017 List of Great Jazz Venues, marking the 4th year the jazz club has been honored with this recognition. This follows the recent designation of Phoenix as one of four "jazz hubs" in the U.S., due in large part to the warm, enriching environment for jazz performers and audiences at The Nash.

Each a magnificent artist in his/her own right, Dave Tull and Rebecca Kilgore join forces to present their stunning talents together on the same stage.

Rebecca Kilgore is one of America's leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the Great American Songbook. She is a frequent guest on NPR's 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross, has appeared at Lincoln Center, on Garrison Keilor's 'A Prairie Home Companion', and with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall. Los Angeles' own Dave Tull has won wide acclaim as a world - class jazz drummer, vocalist, and songwriter. Dave can be heard performing with Seth McFarlane, Michael Buble, and on FOX TV's "Family Guy" show.

The pair is joined by the forces of Randy Porter, an exceptional pianist with a refined understanding of improvisation and bassist Tom Wakeling, known for his major career supporting International Artists from Arturo Sandoval to The Fifth Dimension.

Blessed with a full-bodied and mellifluous voice, extraordinary rhythmic precision and an unerring sense of lyricism, Giacomo Gates does more than sing "a bunch of songs." He is truly an entertainer, for all ages and styles, as audiences enjoy the music, the interaction on the bandstand between him and his musicians, the spontaneity, and the stories about the music and composers, along with their relation to everyday life.

Like his mentors, Gates would sometimes translate great instrumental solos into Vocalese, including the works of Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Gene Ammons, Charlie Rouse and many others, also penning lyrics to classic jazz compositions. Known for his interaction with audiences through witty patter and informative introductions, every performance is a fun lesson in jazz history, filled with sheer joy, exuberance, wit and unlimited creativity.

Multi-instrumentalist Warren Wolf comes to The Nash for his first appearance with The Will Goble Trio. Known for his blazing fast yet always cool style, Wolf is a rising star on the scene and has performed and recorded with many giants in the field including Wynton Marsalis, Rodney Whitaker and Lewis Nash.

For his album Convergence, the Huffington Post declared, "The young lion of vibraphone (was brought) into the spotlight and test his mettle by pairing him with this group of no nonsense talent. Wolf more than rose to the occasion, with the result a recording that combines grit, funk, swing, soul and outright beauty into one of the most satisfying albums of the year."

The incomparable Joey DeFrancesco comes to The Nash as one of the first stops on his 2017 Tour, for his new CD release, Project Freedom. Joey will arrive with his "Freedom Band, Joey DeFrancesco + The People: a new quartet, which features Joey on the Hammond B-3-plus contributions on keyboards, trumpet and as a vocalist.

Joey DeFrancesco's emergence on the organ marked the onset of a musical renaissance. Organ jazz had all but gone into hibernation until DeFrancesco reignited the flame with his vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker cabinet. DeFrancesco has recorded and/or toured with his own groups as well as numerous renowned artists that include Ray Charles, Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, James Moody, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Cobb, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, David Sanborn and many more.

The three time Grammy Award-nominee, with more than 30 recordings as a leader under his belt, has received countless Jazz Journalist Association awards and other accolades worldwide, including being inducted into the inaugural Hammond Organ Hall of Fame in 2014, the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame in 2016 as well as topping the Critics Polls in DownBeat Magazine eleven times over the past fifteen years and the Readers Polls every year since 2005.


Recognized by Downbeat Magazine as one of the top jazz venues in the world, The Nash is named for "the most valuable player" in jazz (Modern Drummer Magazine), Phoenix native Lewis Nash. Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix on "Roosevelt Row, The Nash brings a full calendar of live performances and ensures the future of the iconic art of jazz through its educational and outreach programs. The Nash hosts classic jazz and new music concerts; performances by student musicians, local pros and touring artists; weekly jazz jam sessions; workshops; master classes; and clinics. Educational programs are offered ranging from one-on-one private lessons to combo labs, guided listening, jazz in film, jazz camps and more.

Internationally acclaimed jazz drummer Lewis Nash, named the most valuable player in jazz by Modern Drummer Magazine, was described by Ira Gitler of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as "Perhaps the most talented drummer of his generation." Lewis grew up in south Phoenix and by the early age of 10 years old began playing drums. At age 21 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists - from jazz masters to the hottest young players of today. His 30-year career includes performance on 10 Grammy award-winning albums and an impressive discography of over 400 recordings with jazz legends such as BetTy Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Jones, Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter and Clark Terry, as well as such contemporary jazz artists as Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Joe Lovano and Roy Hargrove. A highly respected educator and clinician, Lewis joined the faculty of the ASU School of Music in January 2017 as the Bob and Gretchen Ravenscroft Professor of Practice in Jazz.
