This Pulitzer and Tony award-winning one-man show is based on the true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an East German transgender woman. Based on her autobiography and interviews conducted by the playwright, Doug Wright, the play is a vivid portrayal by one actor of over thirty different characters, featuring one unique person whose ability to endure and survive the Nazi onslaught and the repressive East German regime, is a fascinating, morally complex and stirring tale.
There are many unanswered questions about certain aspects of Charlotte's life, leaving audience members to draw their own conclusions. Director Elaine "E.E." Moe* states "When I set down a first read of Charlotte's journey it was so impactful, under all the circumstances, I was struck by a favorite quote from J. Campbell that "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." The show stars Seth A. Tucker*, an Arizona native, actor, director, choreographer, playwright and producer. *Members of Actors Equity Association and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
"I Am My Own Wife" is presented through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. *Recommended for audiences 14 years and older.
