Greasepaint Youtheatre presents THE LARAMIE PROJECT, April 7 - 9, 2017, a dramatization of the aftermath of an infamous hate crime. This breathtaking theatrical collage explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. Based on interviews with citizens of Laramie, Wyoming after the murder of Matthew Shepard, this play is a true and heartbreaking story.

Following audience response to last season's highly acclaimEd Heathers the Musical, GYT now takes on the social and artistic challenge of facing homophobia. Producing Artistic Director Maureen Dias Watson said the script cuts through the rhetoric "The Laramie Project brings to light every voice in a community that was shaken to its core by this tragedy. Rage, grief, fear, bigotry are all brought centerstage - unvarnished - and laid bare for your consideration.Which part will you play?"

The Laramie Project was created as a response to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student. As Laramie sat in the national spotlight for the hate crime against a young, gay man, the Tectonic Theater Project, (GROSS INDECENCY: THE THREE TRIALS OF Oscar Wilde, and I AM MY OWN WIFE) helmed by Artistic Director Moisés Kaufman, traveled to the town to interview hundreds of the residents. The community's responses were crafted into a fact-based drama in three acts, a controversial and eye-opening examination of prejudice. Work on The Laramie Project began one month after the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. The Laramie Project premiered at The Ricketson Theatre in Denver in February, 2000 before performing in Union Square Theatre in New York City. Since then the play has been presented to more than 30 million people and is often used to spark conversation and action to combat homophobia.
