One of America's most enduring and endearing icons takes the stage as Greasepaint Youtheatre presents ANNIE JR., running December 9-18, 2016. Scroll down for a sneak peek at the stars in costume!
ANNIE JR. is based on the popular comic strip ANNIE by Harold Gray, Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin. With equal measures of pluck and positivity, Little Orphan Annie charms everyone's hearts despite her next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan.
Annie first entered popular culture in 1885 when James Whitcomb Riley penned the poem "Little Orphant Annie" (The word "Orphant" was used to reflect the Indiana / Hoosier dialect) When Harold Gray launched "Little Orphan Annie and Uncle Dan" in the comic strips of daily newspapers 1924, the popularity of the plucky redhead skyrocketed. Adults began to follow the strip which included commentary on political events of the times. Over the decades Annie inspired a radio show, multiple film adaptations and of course the 1977 Broadway musical and film follow-up.
Greasepaint is proud to present a double feature of Annie as twin sisters Raechel and Simone Rawicz star in alternate performances of the title role.
On the production team are: Director/ Choreographer: Dale Nakagawa; Music Director: Curtis Moeller; and Stage Manager: Becca Courtney.
