Craig Laurie, who originated the role of Bob Crewe in the Chicago company of Jersey Boys, will head the cast of The Phoenix Theatre's upcoming production of the Tony Award winning Yeston/Kopit musical, Nine.
Laurie will play Guido Contini, the role originated by the late Raul Julia and most recently played by Antionio Banderas in the 2003 revival, at the Arizona venue. Performance dates are April 13th through May 8th.
Craig Laurie was seen for nearly 1000 performances as Bob Crewe in the smash hit musical, Jersey Boys, where he performed first in San Francisco then Chicago. He appeared off Broadway in Forbidden Broadway SVU as well as numerous incarnations of Forbidden Broadway throughout the country. He has toured in productions of Chicago, Miss Saigon, and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Among Laurie's regional credits are Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, La Cage aux Folles, and Grease.
Nine is a vibrant and provocative musical based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8 & 1/2. It focuses on film director Guido Contini, as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife, his mistress, his film star muse, his producer and his mother, among others. Nine features music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Arthur Kopit. The original Broadway production was directed by Tommy Tune and won the 1982 Tony for Best Musical. The 2003 revival was directed bt David Leveaux and won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
