Phoenix, AZ -- January brings a full roster of live jazz to downtown Phoenix. Highlights include a free concert, Hot Dogs and Jazz, to kick off our new Family Series, several Latin Jazz performances to heat up the new year and the incredible Rodney Whitaker Quartet. Sunday Jam Sessions continue each Sunday evening, as well as mainstream and contemporary jazz concerts each weekend.

Advance tickets are on sale at www.thenash.org or may be purchased at the door. The Nash is located at 110 E. Roosevelt St in Downtown Phoenix.

A winner of DownBeat Magazine's prestigious 33rd Annual Student Music Awards for his collaborative arrangement of Bebel Gilberto's "Um Segundo,"Peña's love of melody and lyricism was instilled in him as he grew up listening to baroque, classical and romantic music. He is joined by Chris Finet and Jesse-Lee Yarbrough for a night of inspired jazz.

Since moving to New York, Cody has performed in major cities in a multitude of genres and styles including jazz, classical, funk, latin, and rock. He's appeared at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, TX, led quartet at the International Jazz Festival Bern in Switzerland, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. He arrives at the Nash to perform with his distinct style.

Internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, Rodney Whitaker comes to the Nash for this special event. Considered one of the world's finest jazz double bass performers, he completed a seven-year tenure as bassist with the Wynton Marsalis' Sextet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has toured the world over the last twenty-six years, collaborating with over 100+ legendary performing jazz artists such as Dianne Reeves, Kenny Burrell, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, and leading symphony orchestras across the world.

Ioannis Goudelis was born in Athens Greece and grew up in the beautiful island of Corfu.His original music has appeared on FOX TV Series HOUSE, CBS TV Series CRIME SCENE/NCIS, NBC's TV SPECIAL 2011, CW's TV Series NIKITA, feature and short films. As a performer, Ioannis has an original album "Life Goes On' released in 2007. He recently completed the 2011 Jagermeister Country Tour, playing piano with Miss Willie Brown touring over 30 US States. For the past year, he performs regularly at the HOUSE OF BLUES Sunset Strip with a latin jazz quintet.

Contemporary Jazz: Tony Malaby's Paloma Recio

Although this group has only released one record, the self-titled 2009 disc on New World Records, they have become a live sensation, playing countless gigs throughout New York City and elsewhere. The blend of this group varies greatly from many of Malaby's other projects, in large part due to the presence of Ben Monder's electric guitar & the soundscapes he conjures, complemented by the off-kilter swing from bassist Eivind Opsvik and drummer Nasheet Waits.

Join Carmela for the hot simmering sounds of Latin Jazz Salsa. Carmela returns to the Nash to perform the finest in Afro-Cuban Rhythms. The arrangements are superb and the delivery is classic Carmela.

Linda Carmela and Phases
This performance is a 2015 reunion of a band that set Phoenix on fire during the 1980s - 1990s. Rhythm & Blues, Jazz and Fusion were performed by rising vocalists Linda Caldwell and Carmela Ramirez. Linda and Carmela set the tone for performing bands in Phoenix and also drew incredible musicians into the mix that would round out the award winning band. This show will feature original artists from the "Phases" project.

Since 2001, JiGGle has been opening the ears and minds of audiences with their unique approach to jazz improvisation and composition. In addition to performing original compositions, the band also pays homage to the music of Ornette Coleman, Dave Holland, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter. The band has released one studio recording, Secret Happiness, along with numerous live recordings.

The Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Big Band has a national and international reputation as being one of the top high school jazz ensembles in the world.They have won the Essentially Ellington Competition hosted by Wynton Marsalis at the Lincoln Center in New York in 2010, 2012, 2013 and now 2014! At the Nash they will perform the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Wynton Marsalis and others from their Europe Tour and newest CD repertoire.

ABOUT THE NASH - The Nash was named for the great jazz drummer Lewis Nash, described by Ira Gitler of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as "Perhaps the most talented drummer of his generation." Nash grew up in south Phoenix and by the early age of 10 years old began playing drums. At age 21 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists. His impressive discography (over 300 recordings) includes projects with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Hank Jones and John Lewis, as well as new jazz stars Diana Krall, Joe Lovano and Roy Hargrove. Demonstrating his stylistic diversity, Nash is also featured on recordings by Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, Kenny Rankin, Melissa Manchester and George Michael.

Located on the corner of 1st Street and Roosevelt on Roosevelt Row, The Nash has become the center for Jazz in the Valley with musicians and bands from a variety of styles featured at the venue each weekend. The general public is welcome to BYOB for any show except First Fridays. Limit 750ml bottle of wine per couple, or two beers per person. Nominal corkage fee will be charged. The Nash is committed to the development of future jazz musicians and hosts a wide array of vocal and instrumental lessons to encourage ensemble and improvisational work.
