Canyon Moon Theatre Presents IN SEARCH OF THE SACRED Benefit, 3/29

Poetry is the language in which humanity explores its own amazement. Such explorations will unfold at 7 PM on Thursday, March 29th at the Canyon Moon Theatre in the Village of Oak Creek in the Outlet Mall on SR179. After weeks of planning by Mary Guaraldi, the Director-Producer will be opening the theatre doors to a multi-media celebration of art, music and the spoken word as a benefit for two local nonprofit organizations, Gardens of Humanity and Canyon Moon, too.

Billed as a collaborative unfolding of stories of the sacred performances the evening will feature Adele Seronde, celebrated painter, author and poet, and founding president of Gardens for Humanity. “We hope people will come to explore what this search for the sacred means to local poets and painters,” she declares, “and what it might mean to them. Perhaps they will feel a sense of wonder, of awe so intensely that they’ll be overwhelmed.”

Another performer—and the evening’s organizer­­­­----will be longtime Sedonan, a poet, painter, and world traveler. She has traveled to sacred sites around the world and she says they are the central theme of her work. To her, the word sacred means “a person, place, experience held dear or in high esteem, revered or considered transformational and life-giving.”

Also in the program will be Mary Heyborne, a professional potter as well as a poet and playwright who has received prestigious awards in both fields. Her full-length books of poetry include Who’ll Pick the Morning Rose, Ephemerons and Words and Other Lovers.

Here and there during the evening will be music performed by Three Trees who lives in Sedona where he makes and plays many instruments including drums, Native American flutes and also teaches sound healing techniques from African and North American Masters.

Another performer will be Gabrielle Young, self-styled interpreter of the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz and Song of Songs. She has been called “alchemist of gesture, word and movement who gifts the elixir of holy passion.” She has performed live at the Sedona Creative Life Center. For this event, she will include two selections from Gabriela Mistral and Mary Oliver.

Rounding out the evening will be local poet Gary Every an award-winning artist and slam-poet who will introduce original work for the occasion. Finally author-dancer Aya may make an appearance. “It will be a night to remember,” sums up Mary Guaraldi.
