I've lost count of how many productions of SHREK THE MUSICAL I've seen, but I never tire of the story line, the imaginative characters, and the production elements. It's a precious and uplifting paean to self-esteem and empowerment, accentuated by a slate of memorable and upbeat songs and wry (sometimes flatulent) humor.

Given Arizona Broadway Theatre's consistent track record of quality performances, I had every expectation that the company's current staging of SHREK would satisfy my taste for the play.

Well, WOW! It exceeded my expectations. Mace Archer has gone beyond the norm. He has directed something more than a lively and exhilarating show. He's fashioned a distinctive and incredibly intimate and engaging experience that speaks with authenticity to Audience members young and older. (Note: I won't indulge in a recap of the all-too-well-known story of SHREK. I'll rather sing praise to the ensemble and crew!)

Archer is aided and abetted in this theatrical coup by a gangbuster cast, featuring the awesome foursome of Jason Simon as the "big stupid ugly ogre," Liz Fallon as Fiona, Deonte Warren as Donkey, and David Brumfield as Lord Farquaad.

Jason Simon, whom I last saw ~ and enthusiastically applauded ~ as Tevye in ABT's Fiddler on the Roof, has returned to the stage with a vivid demonstration again of his singing prowess and acting versatility. Liz Fallon masters the balance between vulnerability and spunk. Donkey doesn't require an Eddie Murphy re-do; Deonte Warren carries attitude with panache. David Brumfield's Farquaad captures the essence of pomposity and vanity. What stands out among each of these performances ~ credit to Archer ~ is a demonstration that less can be more. None of these actors needs to go over the top to create compelling and lovable characters.

One more shout out: The appearance of the Dragon is always a treat, but what makes this moment extra special is the powerhouse vocalization of Cassandra Klaphake. She belts Forever out of the park.

Adam Berger's band, Jim Hunter's set design, and Lottie Dixon's costumes (complemented by loans from Missoula Children's Theatre) all conspire to create a delightful family treat.

SHREK THE MUSICAL continues its run at Arizona Broadway Theatre through August 14th.
