Opening at Hale Centre Theatre on May 17 and playing through June 30, 2018 is the acclaimed Broadway musical Big Fish. Directed and choreographed by Cambrian James, with Musical Direction by Elizabeth Spencer, Big Fish is a family-friendly, delightful musical with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by John August. It is based on Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel, Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions, and the 2003 film Big Fish written by August and directed by Tim Burton.
Big Fish is literally a "big fish" story. Epic tales, family, romance, and relationships are its theme. This family-friendly Broadway musical is just plain old fun and presented in a fashion that reminds us why we go to the theatre. Big Fish tells the larger-than-life story of Edward Bloom, a man who leads an extraordinary life, at least according to the stories he tells his son, Will. Edward is a traveling salesman, never home much, who tells his young son heroic stories of his adventures involving, among other things, a witch, a giant and a mermaid. Everyone who hears his stories are enthralled, especially his wife Sandra. Will, while entertained, is suspicious of his dad's fish stories. Years pass by, and Edward falls ill. With his mortality in question, Will, who is about to become a father himself and having never really known his father, begins in earnest to search out who his father really was and what made him who he is. As Will begins to unravel the threads of the "fish tales" he was told as a youth, he finds beauty and truth in each story and discovers his father truly was the "heroic" man his stories made him out to be. As the story ends, we find that the "apple never really falls far from the tree" with Will, now telling his young son adventurous and heroic big fish tales of his life.
