Tony Award-winning actress Bernadette Peters will perform at the Scottsdale Cultural Council's annual ARTrageous gala on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 8:30 p.m. at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. She will be accompanied by her longtime arranger and musical director, Marvin Laird, and an eight-piece orchestra. Proceeds benefit Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA).
One of Broadway's brightest stars,
Bernadette Peters is particularly renowned as an interpreter of works by celebrated composer and lyricist
Stephen Sondheim. She recently starred in the critically acclaimed production of
Follies after a highly successful run at the Kennedy Center. Prior to that, she starred in the Tony Award-winning masterpiece
A Little Night Music opposite
Elaine Stritch.
Peters received both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award in 1986 for her critically acclaimed performance in
Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical
Song and Dance. In 1999, she earned her second Tony Award, her third Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in the revival of
Annie Get Your Gun.
A performer of amazing versatility, Peters has acted in many films and received the Golden Globe Award for her memorable performance in
Pennies from Heaven. She also boasts an impressive list of television credits, including appearances on
Will & Grace,
Grey's Anatomy,
Ugly Betty and
Smash, to name just a few. In addition to numerous Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast albums, Peters has recorded six solo albums.
Peters devotes her time and talents to numerous events that benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, in addition to her "pet project," Broadway Barks, which she co-founded with her friend
Mary Tyler Moore to promote the adoption of shelter animals. At the 2012 Tony Awards, she received the honorary
Isabelle Stevenson Award for her humanitarian and charitable work.
