Arizona Theatre Company's own Latino Playwriting Award-Winner, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz, was honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Pulitzer was awarded to Next to Normal, the Tony Award-winning rock musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.

"When The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deitylanded on our desks, we knew it spoke with a distinct new voice," said ATC Playwright-in-Residence Elaine Romero.  "The words danced off the page. What a creative delight. We are so happy to see that awarding The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity the National Latino Playwriting Award was only a first step in the life of this brilliant new work."

The National Latino Playwriting Award was established by Arizona Theatre Company to create a greater awareness of the work being done by Latino playwrights. Other recent recipients of the Award are Raul Garza, Carlos Murrillo, and Karen Zacarias.  Felix Pire's winning play, The Origins of Happiness in Latin, was produced by Arizona Theatre Company. The Award is open to all Latino playwrights currently residing in the United States, its territories, or Mexico. One playwright each year is awarded $1,000 and the possible inclusion of the winning play in ATC's GENESIS: New Play Reading Series.

Arizona Theatre Company's selection panel is currently reviewing submitted scripts for the 2010 Latino Playwriting Award. A winner will be announced the summer of 2010. Submissions for ATC's 2011 Award are due by December 31, 2010.
