SWEENEY TODD auditions in Manila

Repertory Philippines, the country’s pioneering organization when it comes to staging Broadway musicals and straight plays, will be holding open auditions for its newest production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Victorian dark melodrama “Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Auditions will be conducted on July 7, 2009, 6 p.m. at the Repertory Philippines office, C2-A Building C, Karrivin Plaza, 2316 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.  Auditionee must sing songs only from “Sweeney Todd.”

The original stage production of “Sweeney Todd” opened on Broadway at the Uris Theatre in 1971, and ran for 557 performances.  The Tony-winning musical was set to stage by Harold Prince (director) and Harry Fuller (musical director).  It originally starred Len Cariou as the revengeful Mr. Todd and Angela Lansbury as the obsessed lover Mrs. Lovett. 

“Sweeney Todd” follows the dreary tale of a master barber whom a corrupt judge has exiled to Australia.  Sweeney returns to London with vengeance on his mind, and a deadly, sharp razor in his hands.

A fairly recent critically acclaimed film version by director Tim Burton starred undoubtedly talented actors Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett. The film premiered in the U.S. December 2007, and in the U.K. January 2008. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Depp, on the other hand, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy.

In Repertory Philippines’ incarnation of the award-winning musical thriller, the country’s very own King and Queen of musical theater Audie Gemora and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo will give life to the iconic roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett, respectively. 

Repertory Philippines will begin rehearsals for “Sweeney Todd” in September 2009.  The show will open on November 14, 2009 and will run until December.
