SCREEN: MACBETH Merges Theatre And Film, 2/28-3/5

Dr. Anton Juan, Jr. ("Joy Luck Club") directs "Screen: Macbeth," a new interpretation of William Shakespeare's classic play that merges theatre and film.  The University of the Philippines' Department of English and Comparative Literature, in cooperation with the World Theatre Project, presents  "Screen:  Macbeth" at the Media Center Studio, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines' Diliman campus from Monday, February 28 to Saturday, March 5, 2011. 

Juan, one of the Philippines' foremost Shakespearean scholars, teaches at the University of Notre Dame du Lac, a private Catholic research institution in Indiana, and at the University of the Philippines' Department of English and Comparative Literature.  His directorial concept of "Macbeth" takes on an intellectually grounded, multimedia-laden interpretation of the literary classic.

Through historical allusions and visual references, the play embodies both Shakespeare's 17th-century text and today's social and political realities.

"Macbeth" is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy that tackles about a deliberate murder of a monarch and its aftermath.

Theatre stalwarts compose the cast: Teroy Guzman, Judy Ick, Ricky Abad, Ron Capinding, Jaime Wilson, Romnick Sarmenta, Earl Ignacio, Gigi Escalante, Frances Makil- Ignacio , Ian Lomongo, William Manzano and Mary Jane Alejo. There are also guest appearances by actors from Philippine theatre, television and film, i.e. Eugene Domingo plays one of the witches onscreen.

Pat Valera (assistant stage director), Katte Sabate (assistant film director), Jethro Joaquin (sound designer), Ohm David (set designer), Meliton Roxas (lighting designer), Lhenvil Paneda (costume designer), Paul Gaerlan (weapons designer) complete the artistic and production teams.
