Manila, Philippines--Part of the 4th season of Artist Playground, an arts and performance company, new Filipino musical GEE-GEE AT WATERINA makes its world premiere at Arts Above (112 West Venue Bldg., West Ave. Quezon City) on August 18 at 7 p.m. Other performances are set August 19, 25, and 26, also at 7 p.m.
GEE-GEE AT WATERINA features the original story, book and lyrics by prolific playwright J. Dennis Teodosio, and music by Jesse Lucas, co-founder of Artist Playground.
Andrew de Real is the director; Roeder Camañag, artistic director; Lezlie Dailisan, choreographer; Luis Galang, lighting designer, and Reynoso Mercado, production designer.
Its cast includes multi-award-winning actor Roeder Camañag as Waterina, a sex slave during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines (1942-1945), theater actor-event host Norman Penaflorida as Gee-Gee, an actor and radio personality, also a councilor of Pasay City, and ensemble cast members Bench Ortiz, Joseph Dela Cruz, Nel Gumalog, Romeo Palma Jr., and Sean Nolasco.
In the musical, the two leads Gee-Gee and Waterina are eagerly anticipating the film adaptation of the latter's life story as a former "comfort gay" in the 1940s.
Waterina ponders, "Would the people cry or laugh when they watch my movie? Would they feel pity or admiration? Would they think the movie is worth their money? Who would I be to them? An aging homosexual? Just that?"
In the final assessment of his life's worth, Waterina swears that he is what he is: no more, no less. All of a sudden, the sight of a beautiful young man, with a radiant smile, catches his eye.
