Manila, Philippines, October 3, 2012 - More than 250 children from the marginalized areas of Cavite and Quezon cities were treated to a charity performance of Repertory Philippines' (Rep) current children's musical offering, "The Wizard of Oz," at Onstage Theatre, Greenbelt One, Makati City on Sunday, September 30.
This production of the "The Wizard of Oz," based on Frank L. Baum's children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," featuring music by Jean Bargy, and book and lyrics by Jim Eiler, had elicited oohs and aahs from the young Filipino audience as each set changed and new characters were introduced.
Adult audience members also enjoyed the play's fun and whimsical show tunes, and eye-popping sets and costumes that Rep's children's musical productions are known for.
Bargy and Eiler's stage adaptation of the "The Wizard of Oz" was last produced by Rep in 2004. For its children's musical theater arm's 20th anniversary, Rep has opted to restage "The Wizard of Oz" with new sets and costumes.
"'The Wizard of Oz,' like all Rep Children's Theater Productions, is timeless," said Joy Virata, artistic director. "You can identify with the characters no matter who, what, when, or where you are. It talks about friendship, going for your goals, and above all, confidence in oneself."
Rep's "The Wizard of Oz" runs until Sunday, December 16.
