"They're like wine and cheese, aged yet perfect together," says director Ana Abad Santos when BroadwayWorld.com asked her to describe actors Joy Virata and Miguel Faustmann, who star in Peter Quilter's comedy, DUETS.
Peter Quilter's (End Of The Rainbow, Glorious!) DUETS premiered in Atlanta, U.S. last year. DUETS has since had successful productions in New Zealand, Lithuania, Croatia, Australia and Poland. Repertory Philippines' version of DUETS, which opened on the weekend of January 15-17, 2010, marks the play's Asian premiere, and Repertory's first offering for its 73rd Season.
Veteran actors Joy Virata (Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables) and Miguel Faustmann (Tuesdays With Morrie, Evita) fall in and out of "love" through four pairs of characters: Wendy and Jon, two single people on a blind date; Janet and Barrie, two best friends who work together: he is gay, she is his secretary; Shelley and Bobby, a couple on the brink of divorce; and Angela and Toby, a pair of middle-aged siblings.
In DUETS, the audience can see the two actors change their costumes while the stage manager sets up props in between the vignettes.
The play features set design and execution by Tuxqs Rutaquio (A Streetcar Named Desire, Spring Awakening) and Adolfo Lasin (The Secret Garden, M. Butterfly); and lighting design by Martin Esteva (Passion, The Woman In Black).
DUETS runs at the OnStage Theatre, Greenbelt 1, Makati City until January 31, 2010, weekends only: 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For tickets, call (632) 887-0710 or TicketWorld at (632) 891-9999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.
