Manila, Philippines--Co-producers The Sandbox Collective and 9 Works Theatrical recently gave a preview of their new play, Duncan MacMillan's "Every Brilliant Thing," a stripped-down one-woman show that tackles mental illness in a real, funny, and poignant manner--with the help from an active audience.
Supermodel-theater actress Teresa Herrera stars in this play whose character, a seven-year-old girl, creates a list of everything that makes life worth living, as her mother struggles with chronic depression.
"We made Teresa's character as close as possible to her. In the play, we made mention that Teresa grew up in the States. We also mentioned that she's Filipina. We were really conscious about 'localizing' the character to her, so she can perform her role as natural as possible," said the show's director Jenny Jamora about their approach in making the play relatable, comprehensible to an English-speaking audience.
"It also helps that Macmillan's writing and themes are very universal," Jamora added.
Hailed by the New York Post as "...the funniest show about depression you've ever seen," "Every Brilliant Thing" is a mix of heartfelt monologues and meaningful audience participation, which pushes forward an honest discussion about mental health awareness.
In the actual run, expect a post-performance talkback, together with several mental health experts discussing the most important topics about this impairment.
Besides Jamora's direction, this staging of "Every Brilliant Thing" will also feature John Batalla's lighting design, Arvy Dimaculangan's sound design, and Marta Lovina's production design.
"Every Brilliant Thing" will make its Philippine premiere on February 2, 2019, at the Zobel de Ayala Recital Hall, Maybank Performing Arts Theatre.
