Real-life couple Gian Magdangal ("The Wedding Singer", "West Side Story") and Sheree Bautista ("Little Mermaid") lead the cast in Power Plant Cinema and 9 Works Theatrical's limited run of Jonathan Larson's most popular work "Rent" at Rockwell Center's Power Plant Cinema 2 from Wednesday, December 8 to Sunday, December 12, 2010.
Presented through a special arrangement with licensing company Music Theatre International (MTI) in New York City, "Rent" at the Power Plant Cinema marks the cineplex's tenth anniversary (Interestingly, the Power Plant Cinema is celebrating a decade of operations with an imported live theatre production instead with a more conventional film festival.)
Loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme", "Rent" is a Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical that tells the story of one year in the life of eight friends who were living the Bohemian lifestyle in Manhattan's gritty East Village. These friends strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty and the AIDS epidemic at the turn of the millennium.
Most memorable songs from the show include "Seasons of Love", "I'll Cover You" and "Without You".
Originally staged by 9 Works Theatrical ("The Wedding Singer", "Songs for a New World") in the first quarter of 2010, the Company welcomes back to the cast Mr. Magdangal (Roger Davis), Fred Lo (Mark Cohen), OJ Mariano (Tom Collins), Job Bautista (Angel Dummott Shunard), Jenny Villegas (Joanne Jefferson), Gary Junsay, Harold Cruz, Johann de la Fuente, Mark Tayag and Peachy Atilano.
Apart from Ms. Bautista, who plays the role of exotic dancer Mimi in this run, Lorenz Martinez as landlord Benjamin Coffin III, Amparo Sietereales as Mimi alternate, and Mian Dimacali as bisexual performance artist Maureen Johnson are new cast additions. Sab Jose and Pam Imperial are also joining the ensemble.
Veteran stage actor and director Robbie Guevara is once again at the helm of the production. Ricky Villante is the live band's musical director; Onyl Torres is vocal musical director; Mio Infante is scenographer; Martin Esteva is lighting designer; Chuck Ledesma is sound designer; Bek Soriano is costume stylist; and Francis Matheu is choreographer.
The Broadway musical "Rent" runs for a limited eight performances at the Power Plant Cinema 2: December 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (8 p.m.), December 10 (3:30 p.m.), 11 (4 p.m.) and 12 (4:30 p.m.). Tickets are available at the Power Plant Cinema ticket booth. Call (632) 898-1440 or 898 1441 or (63)908-8692988.
