DULAANG U.P., the official theatre organization of the University of the Philippines (U.P.), stages the Filipino adaptation of German playwright Friedrich Schiller's Mary Stuart (Maria Stuart). Translated into Filipino by award-winning writer Allan Pallileo and directed by professor Tony Mabesa, the play will run from November 18 to December 6, 2009 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theatre on U.P. campus.
A tragic story of seduction, greed, deception, power, love, and religion, Mary Stuart shows two iconic women whose struggle for power exemplifies one of the most moving and thrilling displays of passion and politics the world had ever seen.
Stuart, Queen of Scots, faces a predicament of bewitching but tragic proportions as she faces death in the midst of rivalry with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England.
A bloody conflict ensues, involving an acrimonious confrontation between the two women, destroying not only their ties, but threatening the crown of England as well.
Being a devoted Catholic, Stuart spent her last hours praying to God.
This particular production of Mary Stuart is based on the Donmar Warehouse production directed by Phyllida Lloyd, starring Janet McTeer as Stuart, and Harriet Walter as Queen Elizabeth I. The show officially opened on Broadway on April 19, 2009 and ran through August 16, 2009. It has earned Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Play.
The Filipino version features Tess Dumpit, Banaue Miclat of the Metropolitan Opera - Lincoln Center, Shamaine Buencamino, Stella Cañete, Ana Abad Santos, Flor Salangga, Floy Quintos, and the Dulaang U.P. ensemble.
