According to its playwright and director, Jerome Dulin, "[The play's] subplots are motivational, inspiring and funny, including the struggles to make life decisions, and enduring the consequences of such. All stories revolve around the common theme sablayan, a jargon meaning 'graduation.'"
At the the University, sablay is a commemorative sash worn during the graduation ceremony.
The play's title, DAANang SABLAY, may also be interpreted positively, "sablay is the (winner's) way" (daan ang sablay), or negatively, "the way to failure" (daanang sablay).
Dulin adds, "The plots and characters are presented satirically to create more rooted symbols onstage. The dialogues have subliminal messages.
"The stage also symbolizes the personal significance of each of the lead character's life. The stage features a path synapse leading to center stage (arena style) with a single straight road on the other end."
