Manila, Philippines--After a hugely successful repeat run of KINKY BOOTS, Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group continues its 2018 season with two highly anticipated productions, the critically acclaimed musical SIDE SHOW, and the hit Broadway musical WAITRESS, which continues to play to sold-out crowds in New York City and on U.S. National Tour.
In August, Atlantis will premiere the critically acclaimed Broadway musical SIDE SHOW, with music by Henry Krieger, who composed DREAMGIRLS. Based on the true story of conjoined twins and famed entertainers Violet and Daisy Hilton, SIDE SHOW is a remarkable musical about acceptance, love, and embracing one's uniqueness. As the starring act of a sideshow, helmed by an abusive ringmaster, Violet and Daisy Hilton are eager to accept an offer of fame, fortune, and potential romance proffered by Terry, a talent scout, and Buddy, a budding musician. As stars on the Orpheum Circuit, it seems that Violet and Daisy have everything they ever wanted. The one thing they lack, however, is the fulfillment of their hearts' desires. Different as they are, when it comes to matters of the heart, Daisy and Violet have the same burning questions: "Who could proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am?" Nearly entirely sung-through, SIDE SHOW features soulful music, stunningly beautiful lyrics, and powerhouse show-stoppers, particularly the famous duets "Who Will Love Me as I Am" and "I Will Never Leave You." A stunning reminder of the importance of accepting and celebrating what makes us unique, SIDE SHOW is a true story that will touch the audience's heart.
Steven Conde, who has performed in numerous Atlantis Theatrical productions and heads the workshop division of the prolific theater company, will mark his directorial debut with Atlantis. His previous directing credits include the critically-acclaimed WIT, MY NAME IS ASHER LEV, SUICIDE INCORPORATED, and DOG SEES GOD: CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE BLOCKHEAD. He says, "SIDE SHOW is the perfect example of a musical that can change lives. I am more than excited to direct this gem of a musical and share it with audiences, especially those who might feel weighed down by their own peculiarities."
The choreography is by Cecile Martinez, who has been choreographing for Atlantis for 11 years, Set design is by Lawyn Cruz, who last designed the set for GOD OF CARNAGE and just completed her Master's Degree in Scenography at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Lighting design is by JonJon Villareal, who received acclaim for his lighting design of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. Costume design is by Odeon Simpao. Musical direction is by Farley Asuncion and Vocal Coaching is by ManMan Angsico. SIDE SHOW opens August 31st at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.
The first international production of WAITRESS debuts in the Philippines in November. Directed by Atlantis' founding artistic director, Bobby Garcia, the musical continues to be a big hit in New York. Garcia says, 'We are thrilled to be able to premiere a brand new, original production of WAITRESS in the Philippines. A big thanks to Barry Weissler and NAMCO for trusting us with this tasty slice of a musical about realizing what you're worth and forging forward toward your dreams. I am also thrilled to be creating the world of Joe's Pie Diner in collaboration with an amazing creative team. We can't wait to open up the diner for all you soon!"
WAITRESS features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song") and a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) "It's an empowering musical of the highest order!" raves the Chicago Tribune. Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's beloved film, WAITRESS tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.
"WAITRESS is a little slice of heaven!" says Entertainment Weekly and "a monumental contribution to Broadway!" according to Marie Claire. Don't miss this uplifting musical celebrating friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.
Choreographing WAITRESS is Cecile Martinez. Set design is by Tony Award-winning designer David Gallo, who marks his fourth collaboration with Garcia.
