Join Bristol Riverside Theatre for an in-depth post-show exploration of the powerful themes throughout the BRT production of Anna Deavere Smith’s Fires in the Mirrors! In the summer of 1991, Crown Heights, NY, exploded into three days of violence fed by rumors and competing narratives formed from incomplete facts. In the chaos, some saw anti-Black police bias. Others saw violent anti-Semitism. But playwright Anna Deavere Smith heard the honest voices of a divided national narrative. BRT opens 2025 with this remarkable play that features the real words of more than 50 people interviewed immediately after the events in open, honest discussions from multiple perspectives.
Opening conversations include insights from a rabbi and a reverend as they share approaches to discussing complex topics across divides. Participants are then invited to choose a breakout session from the following topics: An Introduction to Hasidic Community and Culture, The Recent History of Crown Heights and the Events of 1991, and Journalistic Challenges: Covering Politically Charged Stories with Sensitivity and Integrity. A wrap-up conversation with Fires actress Phyllis Johnson will conclude the talk. Kosher cuisine catered by Judah Mediterranean Glatt Kosher Grill will be provided, including a variety of sandwiches and vegetarian options! Availability for this free event is limited, and advanced registration is required. This event does not include a ticket to the show.
