Totem Pole Continues Construction For YOU SAY TOMATOES, Slated To Open 6/12-28

Totem Pole's new romantic comedy, You Say Tomatoes is keeping the production crew at the playhouse very busy these days. This new play by Bernard Slade, author of Same Time, Next Year takes place in two different locations and requires two entirely different sets. It's like designing and building two separate plays, says Artistic Director, Ray Ficca. "Many theatres don't do this play because of the scenery requirements." Totem Pole has come to be known as a place for top quality productions, from the performances to the technical side of theatre. Totem Pole Resident Scenic Designer, James Fouchard will be the imagination behind the two set show. Fouchard has been designing at the Playhouse for 28 years.

James Fouchard has been designing sets for the Totem Pole stage for 28 years. Jim shared his thoughts on his Totem Pole experiences. "Designing sets for Totem Pole has offered a variety of challenges over the years. On top of the task of creating an exciting and appropriate environment for each play of the season, I have to keep in mind that whatever I come up with has to be able to be constructed and painted in less then two weeks by our small but highly talented staff, and stay within the tight budget of a summer theatre. To achieve this, over the years I have tried to re-use pieces of sets built for previous shows-some over 30 years ago- to keep both costs down and time spent in construction, while using them in a new and different way."

"My favorite sets I have done here? Hard to decide. There have been so many over the 28 seasons I have been here. But I would have to include the deck of the World War II Navy cargo ship from Mr. Roberts, the spooky drawing room from Dracula, the ramshackle cabin and mountain-scape of Foxfire, the Caribbean Victorian parlor from My Three Angels and the sleek Art Deco salon of Not Now, Darling, which I transformed into the 1960s roadside diner for Wally's Cafe, complete with a giant hamburger bun for a roof!"
