Theatre Horizon concludes its 5th Anniversary Season with Fat Pig by the Tony Award-nominated contemporary playwright, Neil LaBute. Theatre Horizon's Founder and Co-Artistic Director, Matthew Decker directs the Philadelphia-area ensemble in this provocative play by one of the leading contemporary playwrights in the nation.
Fat Pig is a no-holds-barred look at the way we understand size, sex, & love in today's society, where size is one of the last forms of legal discrimination. This scathingly funny social commentary promises audiences a new take on the ages-old story of "boy meets girl." Traditionally handsome Tom falls for Helen (Melissa Joy Hart of the Walnut Street Theatre, Arden Theatre, and City Theater Company) - a bright, funny and sexy woman - who also happens to be plus-sized. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play, Fat Pig challenges our slavish adherence to Hollywood image ideals, and questions our ability to change what we find unattractive in ourselves.
Theatre Horizon is excited to bring LaBute's work to the stage. "The characters that LaBute has created are three dimensional and realistic. He is interested in presented complex, dynamic human relationships," says director Matthew Decker. "In Fat Pig, he creates an unconventional love story between two people that, in society's eyes, are not supposed to be together. Through that relationship, he also examines the difficulty people face when trying to stand up for something they believe in."
The talented cast includes Paul Felder of the Walnut Street Theatre and Arden Theatre. The design team, also Philadelphia based, includes Hallie Keyser (costumes) and Larry Fowler (sound).
"At Theatre Horizon, we want to spark a dialogue with audiences, and Fat Pig play lends itself beautifully to this," says Theatre Horizon Co-Artistic DirectorErin Reilly. "The intimacy of our black box theatre makes this play's humor and poignancy that much more powerful. It's the perfect setting in which the characters - and our audience - can explore these very personal issues."
Theatre Horizon's Fat Pig will begin preview performances April 9th and run through May 1st at the Centre Theater on 208 DeKalb Street, Norristown. This run will also include special post-show discussion events at the following performances: April 11th (2pm), April 14th (7pm), April 18th (2pm), April 22nd (7pm), and April 29th (7pm).
Fat Pig concludes Theatre Horizon's 5th Anniversary Season, which also included the critically acclaimed September production of Little Shop of Horrors and the original revue Holiday Show at the Swing Club Band. Theatre Horizon's mission is to encourage audience members, artists, and students to create a community through theatre.
Theatre Horizon is an active participant in the Norristown Arts Task Force, the goal of which is to revitalize the old industrial riverside town by bringing arts and nightlife to the suburban downtown area. This year, Theatre Horizon will help produce 100 nights of theatre in downtown Norristown.
