January 22-23 @ THE Annenberg Center FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, 3680 Walnut Street
The Bald Soprano, Eugène Ionesco's biting satire of British social conventions, finds the Smiths and Martins, the Maid and Fire Chief trapped by silly routines, mindless manners and non-stop non-communication. At the conclusion of the play, the opening lines are repeated, with The Martins now inhabiting the exact world of the Smiths. But the end is just the beginning in director Madi Distefano's now-iconic interpretation: the actors playing the Smiths and Martins switch roles and soldier on for another dizzying round of absurdism. With a new show every hour for 24 hours-and a come-and-go attendance policy-Brat transforms a 60-minute comedy about suburban malaise into a spectacle of human endurance and audience participation.
