Joe's Pub at The Public partners, once again, with Philadelphia's renowned Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts for the Kimmel Center Theater Residency. Under the guidance of Jay Wahl, Producing Artistic Director of the Kimmel Center, and Shanta Thake, Director of Joe's Pub, the intensive program serves as an incubator for artists and collaborators to create and develop innovative new musical theater projects and music. The program will be held in the Kimmel Center's SEI Innovation Studio (300 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA) from June 5-18 with free public workshops with audience feedback and Q&A on June 16 and 17.
Working together on the selection process, the Kimmel Center and Joe's Pub are thrilled to bring together a group of artists, largely from New York and Philadelphia: critically acclaimed downtown cabaret singer Molly Pope working with Matt Aument (Musical Director and Arranger); New York artist and star of Joan of Arc at The Public Theater Jo Lampert, with musician Kate Ferber; Philadelphia-based theater artist Martha Stuckey, with musician Kate Faust and Isaac Stanford (steel guitar); Americana-soul singer Martha Redbone; and, Broadway actor (Hamilton, In the Heights, Memphis) Daniel Watts with Michael Thurber (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert).
The 2017 cohort will focus on creating multidisciplinary work. Artists will be challenged to transcend their rehearsal limitations and plumb the depths of long-form narrative, with strategic guidance from Thake, Wahl, Ethan Lipton (Playwright-in-Residence) and Ellie Heyman (Director-in-Residence), in addition to their partners. The residency will culminate in excerpt performances at the Kimmel Center that are free for the public to attend.
"We are thrilled to partner once again with The Kimmel Center and have the opportunity to work closely with these five incomparable artist teams." said Shanta Thake, Director of Joe's Pub at The Public. "This amount of support for artists is critical and has proven to be unbelievably fruitful in its last two iterations."
"Our ongoing Theater Residency program partnership with Joe's Pub continues to bring some of the best and most promising artists to Philadelphia to collaborate and create new works," said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. "It has been a profound experience to see so many stellar works born from this program premiered on our stages and now thriving in New York City and beyond."
The program is held at SEI Innovation Studio from June 5-18 with FREE public readings on June 16 and 17 (reservations required). Tickets are available by phone at 215-893-1999, online at kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center Box Office at Broad & Spruce Streets (Daily 10:00AM - 6:00PM).
