The Fulton Theatre is proud to present Red, the final production of the 2017/2018 Ellen Arnold Groff Series in the Tell Studio.
Famed abstract painter Mark Rothko was quoted as saying that he wanted to express "basic human emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom ... The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them." The Tony Award-winning Red delves into this creative genius' mind during the late 1950s when he asked his assistant Ken, "What do you see?" when referring to his latest work. After Ken builds up the confidence, the two challenge each other on "What is art?" and the notion of "Who gets to decide anyway?"
Penned by American writer John Logan, Red first appeared in London, England at The Donmar Warehouse on December 8, 2009. The initial production was directed by Michael Grandage and starred Alfred Molina as Rothko and Eddie Redmayne as his assistant Ken. In March of 2010, the production transferred to Broadway's John Golden Theatre where it won six out of seven Tony Award nominations.
The Fulton Theatre's production of Red stars Logan James Hall as Ken. Logan hails from the mountains of Oregon, by way of NYC, but he is no stranger to the Fulton. Logan's credits include: The Fulton Theater's Venus In Fur (Best Actor in a Play; Broadway World), The Pioneer Theater Company The Glass Menagerie (Jim O'Connor), and Vermont Stage's Sex with Strangers, and the Fulton's 4000 Days and Other Desert Cities.
Also starring is Bill Van Horn as Mark Rothko. Bill recently directed and played Watson in Walnut Street Theatre's international tour of Ken Ludwig's Baskerville, A Sherlock Holmes Mystery. Soon, he will join the resident acting company of the Theater at Monmouth, the official Shakespeare Theatre of the state of Maine for their 2018 summer season.
The creative team for the production includes Bob Cline (Casting Director), Trey Compton (Director), Anthony Lascoskie, Jr. (Costume, Wig, and Makeup Designer), Domingo Mancuello (Stage Manager), William James Mohney (Scenic Designer), Matthew Moran (Sound Designer), Marc Robin (Fulton's Executive Artistic Producer), Josh Schlader (Lighting Designer), and Katelin Walsko (Props Designer, Manager).
